I was asked by .Net magazine to take part in their monthly “Build off” challenge.
Three designers are invited to come up with a website home page design based on a specific brief. The design, a short description and designer bio are printed in the magazine which is (according to their home page meta title):
“The world’s most popular magazine for web designers since 1994”.
My design is featured in the November issue (actually released in the second week of October – 2012) with the project brief to provide a design for a local B&B. So, not the most inspiring of briefs – but fun to take part in none the less.
I have been buying the magazine for the last few years, so it was pretty cool to see my design feature, particularly as the build-off section is the first thing I normally check out when I open it up.
I went with a fictitious B&B called Highland House. The idea behind the design was to use illustrations to get across the character of the house, it’s surroundings and the fun, active, yet relaxing type of getaway the house would offer.
But mainly I just wanted to take the opportunity to create the type of design I would like to do more of, using illustrations and experimenting with different layouts.
